How to Care for Silk: Washing, Drying & Storage Guide
Our Official Care Instructions
Every Ginell Silks order ships with our care card. Here it is in full — follow it and your silk will stay beautiful for years.
How to Wash Pure Silk Products
- Dry clean preferred. This is the safest option, especially for Silk Velvet pieces.
- Machine wash: close the garment in a mesh laundry bag, cold water, gentle cycle, then hang to dry.
-
Hand wash:
- Gently hand wash and soak in lukewarm water (below 40°C / 104°F) — don't soak for too long.
- Separate dark and light colors.
- Use shower gel, shampoo, or another mild detergent. Do not use soap or regular laundry liquid — they scrape and dull the fibers.
Drying
Dry in a shaded area with good air circulation. Avoid direct sun exposure — UV fades color and weakens silk fibers. Never tumble dry, and never wring the garment; roll it in a clean towel to press out water instead.
How to Remove Wrinkles
All silk fabrics wrinkle — the purer the silk, the more easily it wrinkles. Don't worry, it's easy to fix:
- Use your iron on the lowest heat setting, and press the damp garment from the dull backside.
- Place a cotton press cloth between the iron and the silk if needed.
- A handheld steamer also works well.
- No iron or steamer? After hand washing, don't twist — hang the damp garment up and let it dry naturally; gravity smooths most wrinkles.
- Hang silk up when not wearing it to avoid wrinkling in the first place.
Storing Silk
- Store clean, fully dry silk in a cool, dry place, ideally in a breathable garment bag rather than plastic.
- Use padded hangers for heavier pieces like robes to preserve the shoulder shape.
- Cedar blocks or lavender sachets deter moths without chemicals.
A Note on Sizing
Our clothing size labels follow Asian sizing, which runs about 2 sizes smaller than US/international equivalents. If you normally wear a US M, choose our XL. Check the size chart on each product page before ordering.
